Citrus Drive 2004

The annual citrus project was held from 21 to 28 August this year, following on a week after the Taradale project .
Our publicity was good, and we got a huge response from the public. So good was the response that our comittment to Tawa club of 8 crates of citrus was fulfilled in the first weekend, the fruit being despatched to Tawa on Wednesday.
But the fruit just kept pouring in. The 5 drop off stations in Taradale and Napier had to be cleared every couple of days or so to prevent overflow, and some of us with the time kept on picking throughout the week.
The last Saturday was once again a big pick day. Many club members responded, and the objective of picking fruit at all the phoned in addresses was easily achieved.
It was a huge grapefruit season this year, and our consignment of 8 cases to Tawa consisted of 6 grapefruit, 1 lemon and 1 orange.
Our own surplus ended up being a total of 15 crates, so all in all we processed about 11 tonnes of fruit - not too bad according to some observers.
The convenor of this year's project, Peter Ball, was pretty pleased with the result, but of course it was due to the hard work of all members involved, and he is most grateful to them for the work put in.
